A ring type joint gasket is a solid metal ring that seals against precision-machined flange grooves. Assembly load deforms the ring at its sealing contacts.

The ring profile, groove and material must work as a system. A similar diameter alone does not establish compatibility.

Applicable standards

Ring type joint gasket standards and their application
ASME B16.20	Ring-joint material, dimensions, tolerances and marking for the specified connection.
API Specification 6A	Wellhead/tree equipment and applicable ring/flange requirements. Match R, RX or BX to the connection.
Flange / groove	Match ASME B16.5 or the specified API connection, groove profile and rating—not pipe size alone.

R, RX and BX are not universally interchangeable. BX requires the matching 6BX groove system.

Common ring materials & hardness

Ring type joint gasket material selection references
Soft iron — D	90 HB maximum (reference).
Low-carbon steel — S	120 HB maximum (reference); a lower soft-iron limit may be specified.
304 / 316 stainless	UNS S30400 / S31600; 160 HB maximum (reference).
410 stainless	UNS S41000; 170 HB maximum (reference).

HB = Brinell hardness. Confirm maxima against the ordered standard/service; the ring must be softer than the groove. ASTM A276/A276M covers specified stainless bar stock, not finished-ring conformity.

01 / Rounded section

R Type — Oval Ring Joint Gaskets

Oval-section R ring for the specified flange groove. Confirm the ring number, groove geometry and material before selection.

02 / Eight-sided section

R Type — Octagonal Ring Joint Gaskets

Octagonal-section R ring for compatible flat-bottom grooves. Do not substitute it into an older round-bottom groove.

03 / Pressure-energized design

RX Type Ring Joint Gaskets

An adaptation of R with a pressure-energizing geometry. Check the specified groove and finished flange make-up distance before substitution.

04 / API 6BX connection

BX Type Ring Joint Gaskets

Designed for API 6BX flanges, with a pressure-balancing hole. BX is a distinct ring and groove system, not a general replacement for R or RX.
